Luke Garrard has stressed the importance of not getting carried away after Boreham Wood beat promotion favourites Forest Green Rovers 1-0 on the opening day of the new season.

Ricky Shakes scored what proved to be the only goal of the game after 30 minutes as Wood opened their second season in the National League with a well-deserved win against Mark Cooper's expensively-assembled side.

Twelve months earlier Ian Allinson’s Wood team beat FC Halifax Town on the opening day before going on to lose eight of their next 11. Garrard, therefore, knows how important it is to remain grounded despite making the ideal start to the season.

“We’ve got to keep ourselves in check,” Garrard said afterwards. “We’ve won one game – we haven’t done anything yet.

“If we lost today we wouldn’t have been relegated and we’re not going to win the league off the back of beating Forest Green Rovers. We’ve got to keep our feet firmly on the ground.”

The Wood boss continued: “It’s hugely important to build on this but I told the boys afterwards not to get carried away. It’s a win against the favourites. But we don’t know much about them and they don’t know much about us [at this stage of the season.

“Our focus now turns to Dover Athletic on Tuesday night and I want to build on today.”

One slight blot on the afternoon for Boreham Wood was the sight of centre-back David Stephens leaving the field shortly before full time with an injury.

However, Garrard was pleased to confirm it was not as bad as initially feared. He said: “It’s just precautionary. I spoke to Megan (Reid, physiotherapist) with five minutes to play and she said there was a little issue.

"She doesn’t feel there’s anything major in it and I will get an update on Monday.”

Attacking midfielder Daniel Uchechi is likely to miss the next two to three weeks, however.
