Boreham Wood manager Luke Garrard says the forwards on trial have given him food for thought after Kudus Oyenuga's well-taken goal sunk Luton Town on Tuesday evening.

The former Hartlepool United player is a free agent after leaving Victoria Park at the end of last season.

He is no stranger at Meadow Park after a fruitful loan spell in 2014, during which he scored three in 13 league starts, but is battling with Shaun Jeffers – who scored and won in a penalty in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Arsenal – and Angelo Balanta for a contract with the National League outfit.

"It’s food for thought, definitely,” Garrard said following the 1-0 win over the Hatters.

“Shaun got his goal and penalty on Saturday and Kudus got his goal today. He won a couple of aerial battles and was big and strong when backing in. We’ve got three more games left and a lot of decisions to make.”

It wasn’t just Oyenuga who impressed. Garrard was pleased with his team’s display from front to back as Boreham Wood picked up their third win of pre-season against higher-level opposition.

He said: “It’s more than the result. They’re fit, strong, they played with intent and pressed the ball – that was everything we spoke about at the start of the game. The boys got to grips with their shape after the first 15 minutes and that was very pleasing.

“I felt when Conor Clifford gave the ball away in the first half that was Luton’s best opportunity. I’m very happy with the back four and the midfield two. Overall it was a very impressive performance.”

Boreham Wood’s pressing game caught the eye in particular with Nathan Jones’  Luton side afforded next to no time on the ball throughout. But it wasn’t the result of weeks’ of hard work on the training ground, Garrard revealed.

“We only worked on it yesterday so I gave credit to the players afterwards because they took on every bit of information,” he said. “That’s something we’re going to drum into them because we have the fitness levels to do it and you get joy from it.

“We’ve got the personnel to do that and understand it now. You look at Mokesy (Adriano Moke), Daniel Uchechi, Kudus and that’s something we’re going to try to adapt and get into our game.”
