Boreham Wood ended their pre-season campaign with a well fought 1-1 draw against National League South side Hayes and Yeading in a hastily-arranged friendly at Meadow Park.

The game could not have started any worse for the Wood with former Hayes skipper Sam Cox leaving the field to be replaced by Matthew Whichelow within the first ten minutes.

Hayes had the first effort of the night, a deep cross from Fenlon on the right which got caught by the wind went sailing beyond the Hayes frontline.

It took the Wood a while to get started, but credit to Hayes who stopped the home side from playing at every opportunity. However, a chance was manufactured when Whichelow switched from right to left to Graeme Montgomery, who neatly played in Billy Clifford. The skilful midfielder took a touch and just curled his effort over the bar.

Wood caught the Hayes defence cold again when a short corner was worked out to Charlie MacDonald who set himself and shot just wide of the far post.

It was Hayes who took the lead in the 22nd minute, though, a corner from Williams met by Gerring who rose highest and headed past James Russell.

Wood tried to level immediately; a neat piece of skill from Clifford earned a free-kick 25 yards out. The midfield man picked himself up to take the set-piece but shot straight into the well organised wall.

Another well-worked move from Wood saw Luke Howell find space down the right but his cut back went right across goal and found Montgomery who saw his shot well-blocked by the Hayes defence.

Wood were given the perfect chance to get level when Ricky Shakes was fouled in the box by Gerring. MacDonald stepped up but Hayes stopper Norman made a great save to deny the experienced forward.

A change of Wood personal followed with attacking pair Junior Morias and Harry Crawford replacing MacDonald and Clifford. Crawford subsequently forced a good save from Norman low down to his right.

A mix up in the Hayes defence then allowed Whichelow a shot on goal which drifted wide of the far post. Howell was next to go close with an effort from just outside the box following a lay-off from Whichelow.

It was Morias who got Wood their equalising goal, though, a neat through-ball from Shakes freeing the forward who shook off the attentions of a defender before slotting past Hayes keeper Norman.

Late on Hayes' Worsfold saw a rasping drive from distance deflected for a corner which was well cleared by the Wood defence and the game finished with the two sides tied.

Speaking afterwards boss Ian Allinson said: “It was a good game played at a high tempo. It sets us up nicely now for FC Halifax Town on Saturday.

"All credit to Hayes tonight as they came here to stop us playing and that test was good for us."

He continued: "I was disappointed with the way in which we conceded as we have spoken about it at length throughout pre-season and we will address it again at training tomorrow."

And asked about the injuries to Sam Cox and Dan Woodards, he explained: “It was precautionary really and I would expect both to be available for Saturday, but we need to give it 24 hours and then (physio) Megan (Reid) can assess them before we make any decisions."
