Boreham Wood boss Ian Allinson is targeting two more signings ahead of his side’s debut in Vanarama National League in nine days.

The former Arsenal player says his busy summer of recruitment is still not complete and he will be onto chairman Danny Hunter again this week asking for more resources to strengthen his pack again ahead of the big kick-off at home to FC Halifax Town on Saturday, August 8.

His latest headline signing, striker Charlie MacDonald, took just nine minutes of his debut to open his Wood account with the opening goal in Tuesday night’s morale-boosting 3-0 warm-up win over visitors Ebbsfleet United.

Allinson said: “He showed in those first 45 minutes what an asset he’s going to be to this football club. He could probably still be playing for a Football League club and we are delighted we’ve got him.”

The 34-year-old striker led Barnet back into the Football League last season, scoring eight times and laying on 10 others in 24 league starts for the title-winning Bees, and Allinson is backing the former Brentford, MK Dons, Southend United and Oldham Athletic goal-getter to keep on getting the goals and be right up there among the league’s top scorers this time around.

Allinson said: “If we create the chances for him, then he will get the goals. His record speaks for itself. It can only be good for the club that we are attracting these sort of players and his quality was there for all to see on Tuesday.”

With former Football League regular Danny Woodwards slotting in nicely at left back and Scott Doe and Luke Howells coming in from Football League side Dagenham & Redbridge alongside former Chelsea, Royal Antwerp and Walsall player Billy Clifford, Allinson says he would be happy to start the season with what he has got but, he adds, he will be trying to bring in two more new recruits.

He said: “We are going into the unknown as a club and I am going into the unknown as a manager in this league and I still think we need one or two more, maybe a forward and an attacking midfielder. I am looking for people that are still hungry, just like the players I have brought in. But, if the season started tomorrow, I would be happy to go with what we’ve got.

“The chairman has been excellent whenever I have asked him for a little bit more, and if we could get another one or two more in before the transfer window closes it would give us that little bit more depth.”

He added: “There’s an excitement about the place. The players have worked extremely hard over the last three or four weeks.

“We’ve got some new people in but we’ve still got the good dressing room spirit we had last season.”

Wood face a tough start with a batch of fixtures against several of the leading lights from last season – but the boss is not fazed.

Allinson said: “I have never been frightened by a challenge. [As a player] I went from Colchester United to Arsenal who were in the first division and within six or seven weeks I was in the first team there.

“These are exciting times for the club. We are rubbing shoulders with some big clubs this season, we have got a tough start but I am pleased with the squad we have put together and we are confident we can try and hold our own in there and play attractive football.”

Following the midweek win over Ebbsfleet, where Graeme Montgomery was twice on target in sealing a satisfying result against former Conference South foes, Wood face Biggleswade United away on Saturday and Hayes and Yeading at home on Monday, before their big adventure kicks off at home to FC Halifax Town.

For Monday’s match against Hayes and Yeading, the club is repeating its offer of free admission to the club’s season ticket holders which should have applied to last week’s pre-season friendly against an Arsenal XI that was called off.
