Boreham Wood's third pre-season fixture saw Championship visitors Brentford win 3-0 on a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon at Meadow Park.

All three goals came in the first half, with two from Andre Gray and a fierce strike from Spanish forward Jota putting the Bees in command.

Wood’s summer transfer activity went into overdrive this week, with five players signing contracts in the space of two days. Four of the new squad members – goalkeeper Preston Edwards, defender Scott Doe, plus midfielders Billy Clifford and Luke Howells - featured.

Wood started brightly, with Clifford curling a shot over the bar from the edge of the box in the opening 90 seconds.

Ricky Shakes also fired over from Harry Crawford's lay-off on six minutes.

At the other end, Brentford almost took the lead two minutes later. Jake Bidwell's fierce drive flashed narrowly past James Russell's left-hand post, as Yoann Barbet just failed to get a touch.

But the visitors did open the scoring on the quarter-hour mark from the penalty spot. As Gray tried to bring a long through-ball under control, he was clumsily fouled from behind by Ben Nunn.

Gray took the spot-kick himself, comfortably beating Russell who guessed wrongly when diving to his right.

With the Championship side starting to stamp their authority on the game, Russell did well to gather Alan Judge's inswinging corner under pressure.

Under the warm sun the players took a drinks break after half an hour. Within a minute of the resumption, Brentford doubled their lead in spectacular fashion.

Collecting the ball 20 yards from goal, Jota brought the visiting fans to their feet with a ferocious drive which flew into the top corner past Russell's despairing dive.

In reply for Wood, Montgomery sent a curling 20-yard shot into the arms of Bees keeper David Button.

Clifford then curled a free-kick from the edge of the box harmlessly over the bar.

A minute before the break, Russell did well to parry Judge's 25-yard free-kick out for a corner as Brentford continued to show their superiority.

The third goal for the visitors arrived just ahead of half-time. Judge floated in a cross from the right touchline towards the far post, where Stuart Dallas was able to squeeze the ball back across the box for Gray to tap in his second of the afternoon.

As expected, there were numerous substitutions at the interval, Wood making five changes and Brentford eight.

The new-look line-ups both struggled to find any momentum after the restart.

For Wood, Clifford sent a 20-yard shot over the bar on the hour-mark.

Gray then nearly completed his hat-trick for the Bees. The former Luton Town striker held off the challenge of Doe but saw his low drive blocked by the legs of new loan signing Edwards.

Brentford's Courtney Senior skipped skilfully past three defenders down the left channel before Edwards was able gather the ball at the winger's feet.

Shakes might have pulled one back for Wood with 15 minutes left, but fired over from a good position after a dummy from Howell had left him well-placed.

With the Bees back on the attack, Senior curled a shot wide from the edge of the box.

There was now a muted atmosphere in the ground as the contest headed towards its close.

Two minutes from time, Wood skipper Callum Reynolds wasted a free-kick taken from inside his own half, hitting the ball out for goal-kick.

In the final minute, Clifford drove another free-kick over the bar from the edge of the box after playing a one-two with Nunn.

Wood continue their pre-season programme on Friday evening, when Arsène Wenger will send an Arsenal XI to Meadow Park for the popular annual fixture between the two sides.
