Borehamwood teenager Ellie Baker celebrated winning gold in the senior girls 800m at the English Schools Athletics Championships in Gateshead last weekend.
Baker recorded a time of 2.07.79 to win the Under-20 race in a season's best time. It was a world youth qualifying time but Baker missed out on a place because the squad had already been selected.
The 17-year-old has been running for five years and has steadily improved. In her first outing at the English Schools Championships in 2013, Baker won bronze.
The teenager then surpassed this last season when she was runner-up. But Baker produced her best performance yet last weekend to land the title despite coming up against older competitors.
Baker will now target qualification for the World Junior Championships in Russia next year.
