New Boreham Wood signing Ben Herd insists the players are not feeling under pressure to win the Conference South title this season.

The former Watford and Shrewsbury Town defender moved to Meadow Park earlier this month and joins a side sitting top of the table with only a couple of months of the season remaining.

But Herd claims the players are not feeling nervous about holding off their rivals in the promotion race and are just enjoying the challenge.

Herd, who joined Wood from Dunstable Town, said: “From what I can see I don’t think the players are feeling under pressure.

“They just want to go out, enjoy their football and perform for the club.”

Having led the table for so much of this season, missing out on the championship would be considered a disappointment but Herd insists the team would be able to put this behind them.

The right-back said: “Obviously having led the league for so long if we missed out it would be a disappointment.

“But you can’t afford to feel sorry for yourselves in football and if it means we’re in the play-offs then we’ll just focus on the next best thing and winning them. There is no time for sentiment.”

Ian Allinson’s side moved back into first place after a 4-1 win at Weston-super-Mare on Saturday but second-placed Bromley are just two points behind with three games in hand.

However, Herd believes it could be an advantage having the lead with their rivals facing a much busier fixture list during the run-in.

He said: “We are in the fortunate position where we have not got many midweek matches remaining.

“I would rather have points on the board than games in hand.

“At this level fitness, could play a part if teams have lots of matches during the run-in.”

Wood opened the scoring against Weston-super-Mare when Lee Angol headed in his 21st goal of the season.

The visitors extended their lead in the second half when Ricky Shakes nodded home.

The match was effectively over when Daryl McMahon’s shot was diverted into his own net by defender Tom Jordan.

Debutant Charlie Walker, who has joined until the end of the season on loan from Luton Town, added the fourth goal from close range late on. The hosts grabbed a consolation through Oliver Watkins but it was Wood’s day.

Allinson’s side host sixth-placed Havant & Waterlooville this weekend.

Wood have confirmed their Herts Senior Cup semi-final at home to St Albans City will take place at 7.45pm on Tuesday, March 10.
