The Conference South title race took a dramatic twist on Tuesday evening as Boreham Wood were knocked off top spot by Bromley.

The Wood were not in action, whilst Bromley were 1-0 winners at big-spending Ebbsfleet United, enough to see the south London outfit leapfrog Ian Allinson’s men and go top by a point.

Bromley still hold the added advantage of two games in hand.

Allinson’s side were held for just the fourth time this season on Saturday as they played out a goalless draw with Concord Rangers at Meadow Park.

Reflecting on a stalemate against the Beachboys, Allinson felt his side’s attacking play had not been up to scratch.

He told the club website: “I am a little disappointed as we had the clearer chances to win the game.

“I felt we needed to move the ball quicker in the final third and I have let the players know that.”

The former Arsenal midfielder added: “On the positive side we have recorded a second clean sheet in succession after our two heavy defeats.

“We improved after the interval and Concord defended superbly. It is one point more towards our goal and we still have thirty points to play for.

“We also have Ben Nunn due back in the country next week, so defensively we look assured again.”

Wood made their intentions clear from the outset. Winger Graeme Montgomery, recalled to the side, picked out the run of Junior Morias but the forward could not stretch Arsenal loanee Josh Vickers in the Concord goal.

In a first half low on chances, Wood goalkeeper James Russell was underworked, with Gary Ogilvie’s shot over the bar as close as Danny Cowley’s side came.

The home side continued to push for the breakthrough goal. Lee Angol charged towards the Concord penalty area before offloading for Matty Whichelow to stretch Vickers with a low effort.

Russell had to be alert to keep out Taylor Miles’ free kick for the Essex outfit before Wood hit back via Angol, who was again denied by the presence of Vickers.

After the interval, Wood went close to striking the first blow when Josh Hill lobbed wide.

Another chance was squandered when debutant Ben Herd saw his free-kick delivery spilled by Vickers but Whichelow’s eventual follow-up was kept out by the faultless gloveman.

Defensive pair Herd and Hill combined to pick out Luton Town loanee Angol with a ball over the top but his cross was thrashed over by Montgomery.

Ogilvie fired over late on but neither side could find a winner.

Boreham Wood return to action on Saturday when they travel to Weston-super-Mare looking to reinvigorate their promotion push.
