ELSTREE and Borehamwood’s new town mayor promised to focus on issues regarding young people in his first speech.

Cllr Clive Butchins was elected as the new mayor by unanimous vote at the full council meeting, in Fairway Hall, on May 11.

The Hillside representative will replace Cllr Richard Butler, who spent a year in office.

In his first speech at the meeting, Cllr Butchins said his main priority will be visiting schools in the area.

He said: “I am most honoured by your confidence that I will represent the Town once again with the necessary commitment and devotion.

“I promise that I will do my very best to fulfil your expectations.

“Last time I was in this position I said that I wanted to prioritise youth – thinking about the children of this Parish who represent the future for us all.

“To that end I was able to visit some of the schools but unfortunately not all of them, so this time I shall aim to at least visit the ones that I have so far missed.”

Kenilworth Cllr Eric Silver was elected as the town council’s new deputy mayor and will work alongside Mr Butchins.
