VOLUNTEERS at a foodbank say they are “deeply touched” by the community’s support after they were given a cluster of plastic bags.

Borehamwood Food Bank, which is run from St Teresa’s Church, in Shenley Road, were given more than 500 personalised plastic bags.

They were donated by both Symphony Environmental and Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council ahead of new legislation which comes in next month, making it compulsory for shops to charge for bags.

Town Councillors Pat Strack and Clive Butchins were on hand to present the bags, along with Robert Bobroff from Symphony Environmental to Foodbank coordinator Kim Gray.

Kim Gray said “We'd like to thank Elstree & Borehamwood Council and Symphony Environmental for their generous donation of carrier bags to the Borehamwood Foodbank.

“We have been deeply touched by the generosity of local people and businesses and we are very grateful for your support.”

To date, the food bank has fed 4,854 people – each having food for around ten meals to provide a crisis intervention while the authority organises long term solutions.

But it is low on stock and is appealing for non-perishable items, including tinned meat, fish and vegetables, jam, long-life milk and fruit juices, snack bars or honey.

Ms Gray added: “The Foodbank is very low on food stock at the moment after a very busy summer and any food and carrier bag donations would be much appreciated.

“This makes a huge difference to them as well as the wider community.”
