Chatterbox children gave Eliza Doolittle a run for her money during a speaking competition.

Pupils from St Teresa’s School, Brook Road, Borehamwood, took part in the annual Speakers Cup this week.

The competition began when four to 11-year-olds from each class competed in the class heats, before being voted as the winner to go up against winners from other years.

The finalists were Katie, who told the school about Harry Potter and Amelia who fired off everything she knows about Roald Dahl.

Glenda spoke about Britain’s Got Talent while Isabella told the school all about the Minions. Leah, who spoke about Irish dancing and Year Six pupil Issie, who spoke about the qualities held by her classmates, were both crowned the winners.

Issie said: "I was shaking inside but also excited. My heart was pounding when I got up to speak but when I started I felt good. I am really proud that I won in my last year at St Teresa's.”

Issie has now been invited back next year to be a judge.

Leah said: " I felt really good and proud of myself. I was surprised I won. I was so nervous when it came to the results. Then I thought 'wow' I have come first. I am so happy. I enjoyed it."

Headteacher Teresa McBride said: “Speakers' Cup is one of the highllights of our school year. The whole school takes part and every child makes such a great effort to prepare an interesting speech and present it to their class.

“This is one of the ways we develop the children's Spoken Language. The finalists all did a fantastic job and I am very proud of their achievements. They are all winners."
