As the clocks go back this weekend, fire crews at Borehamwood fire station are urging people to test their smoke alarms too.
As part Older Persons month, fire fighters from Borehamwood are encouraging members of the public to 'tick, tock test' their relatives or neighbours smoke alarms.
Hertfordshire’s fire and rescue service provide free home fire safety visits and smoke alarms for all members of the community, especially vulnerable and elderly residents.
Specialist smoke alarms can also be provided for those who may be deaf or suffering from a hearing impairment.
Watch Commander Bob Williams said: "This month is ‘older persons month’ and we are asking people to test the smoke alarms of elderly and vulnerable family members and neighbours. If you are visiting a relative or friend, please make sure they have a working smoke alarm on each floor of their home.
"We know that smoke alarms save lives. They can give you and your family the necessary warning to get out in the early stages of a fire, and call 999, which should in turn allow us to get to you more quickly."
